Our Mission

The Developmental Disabilities Alliance of Western New York (DDAWNY) is a collaborative group of member voluntary agencies that provide services to people with developmental disabilities.  While honoring individual agency missions, it is the intent of the Alliance to assist agencies to develop relationships, promote unified strategies and share risks for the mutual gain with and for the benefit of people with developmental disabilities.

OMRDD Name Change!
Former OMRDD Commissioner Diana Jones Ritter announced on July 13, 2010 that a name change for the agency has been signed into law by NYS Governor David Patterson.  The agency will now be called  OPWDD, Office for Persons With Developmental Disabilities.  Click "Read More" for Former Commissioner Ritter's complete announcement.

Children & Families Hearing

On Tuesday, August 3rd, the Assembly Standing Committee on Children and Families Assembly Standing Committee on Oversight, Analysis and Investigation will hold a public hearing.  The purpose of the hearing will be to examine the effectiveness of adult protective services in responding to the needs of vulnerable adults. 

We encourage each of our DDAWNY member agencies to attend.  The meeting will be held at: Erie Community College, Minnie Gillette Auditorium, 121 Ellicott St, Buffalo, NY on Tuesday, August 3, 2010 at 10:00 am.

Senator Kruger's legislation

"Dear Friend- You spoke to us and we listened!"   That is how the Chair of the Senate Finance Committee, Senator Kruger, begins his letter introducing new legislation that outlines an alternative deficit reduction plan.  He mentions how impacted he was especially by testimony given at the Senate hearings in Buffalo from someone speaking about the importance of services to people who have developmental disabilities.

American Worker: For a satirical look at the plight of Direct Care Workers, visit this website,  developed by United Cerebral Palsy and ANCOR, WhoWillCare.Net.  The site pits "Flip the Fry Guy" against "Carrie Caregiver" as the two contestants sing their hearts out for a raise and to become the next American Worker.
